3G Shutdown - Things to Know

2talk Mobile operates on the 2degrees mobile network. As of February 2026 the 2degrees 3G network service is no longer available.

What is happening?

3G technology was first introduced in 2009 and has been a reliable technology but has been surpassed by customer demand for 4G and 5G services.

Mobile network providers in New Zealand and around the world are shutting down 3G networks to make way for faster and more power efficient 4G and 5G technology. This means customers who are still using 3G reliant devices, not just phones, will need to update device settings or upgrade to a newer device before the networks are switched off to retain connectivity both in New Zealand and when roaming overseas.

When is this happening?

As of February 2026 the 2degrees 3G network is no longer available.

Spark and One NZ are also switching off 3G with similar timelines to 2degrees.

International providers are continuing to shut down their 3G networks - this includes Australia.

Why is this happening?

Shutting down 3G allows mobile operators to enhance their 4G and 5G services, including redeploying spectrum.

What does this mean for me?

Most newer devices will require no action - if you are not sure please check your device to see if it will keep working.

Some devices will require a change to settings to enable VoLTE (voice calling over 4G).

Some phones are not compatible for VoLTE and customers will need to upgrade to a new device.  Check your device to make sure.

*VoLTE stands for Voice over Long Term Evolution (LTE) which is another name for 4G. VoLTE allows you to make high-definition (HD) calls from a mobile using a 4G network.
